The basic aims of Gaelic Medium Education are to develop pupils' Gaelic language skills and to support pupils' personal development through Gaelic literature and culture.  The children begin in Primary 1, usually 'feeding in' from the Gaelic Nursery in the school.  During the first two years at school, the curriculum is delivered entirely in Gaelic.  During Primary 3, the children begin a bilingual programme, with the introduction of English reading and writing.  Finally, at Primary 6 and 7 stages the children also learn French.

Where to learn Gaelic in South Lanarkshire?

The council has little provision to teach adults in South Lanarkshire. Apparently East Kilbride Library has Gaelic lessons sometimes though the Council Website does not advertise them.

Despite the Council's belief that the local colleges and universities offer Gaelic lessons, there is currently no provision for Gaelic in South Lanarkshire at Further Education or Higher Education levels.

Why learn Gaelic in South Lanarkshire?

  • Learning Gaelic is Challenging and Fun!
As with learning any other language, Gaelic lessons are great for stepping outside your daily routine and doing something new and challenging. You will be introduced to a whole new world of culture, music and history right on your doorstep whilst making many new friends also interested in mastering the language.
  • Learn Gaelic to be ahead of the game!

As a result of the Gaelic Language Act, South Lanarkshire Council will soon be issued a Notice requesting a copy of their Gaelic Language Plan and within the next couple of years, South Lanarkshire Council will have to implement their Gaelic Language Plan. If you're already learning the language then you will be in a good position to influence how the Gaelic language develops in your area. Also, when the next census is being carried out you will be able to say you have Gaelic as a language too.

  • Learn Gaelic to bring the National MOD to South Lanarkshire
The MOD would benefit South Lanarkshire's local economy, boosting tourism, leisure and hospitality in the area. A provincial Mod exists in East Kilbride already offering a great opportunity for neighbouring communities of Gaelic learners to work together in achieving to bring the National Mod to South Lanarkshire.
